Coppola took in a dead show and decided Mickey and Billy should do some work on the soundtrack for Apocalypse Now.

Shortly after the Movie debut in 79 - Mickey and Billy released an album "THE APOCALYPSE NOW SESSIONS: THE RHYTHM DEVILS PLAY RIVER MUSIC"

Thus the name Rhythm Devils. "The Beast" was built at this time and moved into use at concerts.

Call it what you want Drumz - Devils - its all one of the same.

As far as the devil thing, I asked Frederic Lieberman (ethnomusicologist co-author with M. Hart) why drums and devils. He didn't want to talk about it and just mentioned that stringed instrument were associated with devils as often.

I was just left then with Bullwinkle the moose with a turban on his head at a table with a crystal ball, who said (staring into the crystal ball) "Eenie-weenie, chili-beanie, the spirits are about to speak."

So Rocky the flying squirrel asked, "Spirits? But Bullwinkle, are they friendly spirits?"

To which Bullwinkle replied, "Friendly? Just listen ..."

Then they cut to a commercial break.

Gotta be careful with the pitchman, he might be covering something up (with that tar).

the sky is carolina blue so you don't step in it while devils like myself are blue when unc gets first unanimous preseason #1 ever in men's hoops (which means nothing), so i'm left, as always, urging GO TO HELL, CAROLINA, GO TO HELL.

Shadow of a Man is quite qood - Copeland was sick at 'R00 in '06.

as far as I know, the Rhythm Devils was the name Bill & Mickey took on when they played "Drums", which was their percussion interlude in the 2nd set.

Probably after Mickey built 'The Beast' and they started drums/space in the late 70's before The Apocalypse Now Sessions.

That would seem to be sometime after he saw Francisco and his Cosmic Beam, maybe through Shanti:
